Peacefully on Saturday, January 17, 2015 Charles
Peter Olinyk, aged 88 years old, passed away at the Grace Hospital surrounded
by his loving family as were his wishes. He waited until everyone made it home.
Charlie leaves to mourn his loving wife of 63
years, Lois Olinyk; his seven children, Rod (Doreen), Charlene (Dave), Julie
(John), David, Barry (Jen), Kathy (Barrie) and Rob (Renee). Fifteen
grandchildren, Chris, Shawn (Jenna), Kyle, Ashley (Travis), Kayla (Sean),
Lyndsay (Derek), Brad (Kate), Whitney, Jeremy, Ryan R, Ryan A, Travis,
Samantha, Abbey, and Jesse. Charlie was predeceased by his mother and father,
his sisters, Carolyn, Helen, Evelyn, Verna, and his brother Stan.
Charlie was a man of faith and family. He worked
for Manitoba Motor Transit, and then Grey Goose Bus Lines before retiring in
1991. In his early years he played in a band where he met his beautiful wife
Lois at a dance and fixed her shoe. They married and settled down to raise
seven children, living in Oakburn, The Pas, Dauphin, and finally Winnipeg.
Faith was important to Charlie, passed down from his own mother where he grew
up on a farm in rural Manitoba. He was a volunteer at the John XXlll Roman
Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Eucharistic
minister. This is how he lived his life. Charlie was foremost a family man, and
loved everything about his children and grandchildren. He played his guitar and
sang to them when they were small, and attended numerous hockey games and
events for his grandchildren. He prayed for them all daily, and was always
ready to provide some advice and just have a visit with them. He was known to
smoke a stogie and have a shot with the boys in Rod's backyard and pool.
Charlie loved to decorate the house on Addison with Christmas lights, and could
be seen each year with a cigarette, frost on his eyeglasses, and a stiff drink
to ward off the cold. Charlie loved music, especially country music, and
identified with the music of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash as well as many
devotional hymns and songs. In his later years, as his mobility decreased, he
watched daily mass, and prayed for everyone. This was his legacy; faith and
family.
Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on
Thursday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. at John XXlll Roman Catholic Parish, 3390
Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Father Rev. Gerald Langevin presiding.
The family wishes to thank the nurses, and staff
at the Grace Hospital for taking care of our father these last six weeks,
Father Gerald for visiting and providing spiritual support, Elsie Rosler for
bringing communion on Sundays to both Mom and Dad's residences, Susan Zeke at
Sturgeon Creek Retirement residence for going out of her way to provide
emotional and physical support to both Mom and Dad.
Rest in
peace Dad, and may perpetual light shine upon you. You are so loved. We will
always remember that "We come from a long line of love." and take
care of one another. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to the
John XXlll enhancement fund.
