IDA VICTORIA SULLIVAN
(nee McDONALD)
December 8, 1919 – November 1, 2014
It is with sadness that we announce the passing
of Auntie Ida at Victoria General Hospital on Saturday, November 1, 2014.
Ida is survived by many McDonald nieces and
nephews including Charlene Terris (son Glen), Jim McClements and his wife Vicki
(children Tanya, Todd and Trent), Dan McDonald and his wife Brenda (daughter
Danna). On the Sullivan side, she is survived by sisters-in-law Millie
Sullivan, Joan Potthast, and Peggy Nommenson as well as Anne and Jim Master, Bob
and Erna Sullivan; nephew Bob (Margaret) Sullivan; as well as many more nieces
and nephews and their children. Ida was very proud of all her nieces and
nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her husband Roger; sisters
Irene Brown, Marie McClements, Jean Kerry and her brother Joe McDonald; nephew
John Brown and niece Joanne Jackson; brothers-in-law Fr. Jack Sullivan, OMI,
Art Sullivan, Richard Sullivan, Herb Nommenson and sister-in-law Audrey
Sullivan.
Born the eighth child of Daniel Owen and
Lillian McDonald; Ida took great pride in being the youngest of the family and
being the favorite of her father. She attended St Mary’s Academy rather than a
convent, which she felt distinguished her from her older sisters. Ida was
active in her youth playing sports such as golf and ball and in her later years
organizing events for others including movies at The Bolton and organizing the
jig saw puzzles.
After completing Business College, Ida worked
for a plumbing supply company. She had
a long and distinguished career with Manitoba Hydro where she retired as the
head of the stenographer pool as well as being responsible for all the Hydro
filing.
At a dance in 1944 Ida met the love of her life,
Roger Sullivan. Their relationship blossomed and they shared many passions
together. They loved each other so much they were married twice: first in a
civil ceremony in 1971 and later in 1976 in St. Ignatius Church. One of their
passions was traveling with their trailer which eventually found a home on the
Lee River where they spent many summers and weekends. Later in their retirement they travelled to
Victoria for the winters.
Ida will be remembered for her strong
character, willingness to speak her mind and a sense of humor. She loved music - especially “her music” (the
big bands). She challenged willing staff
to sing her favorite songs to her and then would sing along. She listened to “her music” on “her radio” up
to the very last minute.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on
Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church,
510 River Avenue, with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano presiding.
The last nine years of Ida’s life were spent as
part of the Bolton Retirement Community. She often shared stories with her
family illustrating the kindness of both residents and staff. The care was
professional and personalized. Her family very much appreciates all The Bolton
staff, but wants especially thank Karen Zacharias whose support of Ida and our
family was extraordinary.
Ida’s final three months were spent at Victoria
General Hospital. The family would like to acknowledge the special care and
attention provided to all of the patients. During visits Ida often expressed
her appreciation of the professional yet personal support. In the last few days
the VGH staff constantly shared ”Ida stories”, reflecting on her character,
good spirit and humor but at the same time, illustrated their special
commitment to the folks they support.
