WOJCIK'S FUNERAL HOME - ADELE VICKNER FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

JOAN “ADELE” VICKNER

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Joan Adele Vickner on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the age of 79 years.
Adele will be remembered by her children Dale and Sharon as a loving and proud Mom.  She is also survived by her grandson Matthew and great grandson Leo. She was predeceased by her husband Ron; and her mother and father William and Margaret Smith.
Born in Winnipeg Adele spent her early years in the West End and West Kildonan. As a young woman she loved to roller skate and go to movies with her friends. In 1959 she met Ron they fell in love and married two years later. They rented a house on Bannatyne then two years later adopted Dale. Two years after that they purchased a home in Transcona and adopted Sharon in 1968.
Adele loved gardening and produced a bountiful harvest every year. She spent countless hours canning those vegetables in the fall. She always loved crafts. Needlepoint gave way to knitting and then later to crocheting.  Adele finished countless afghans, sweaters, touques, and mittens for her family and neighbors for many years. Her Christmas baking began in November every year. She went to considerable lengths to keep her children’s hands off that baking until the annual Christmas Eve bash they threw at their Kootenay Crescent home. Adele worked for many years as part of the clerical staff at the Northern Medical Unit (Health Sciences Centre) and befriended and supported many Inuit folks and loved their handmade craftwork. The home always had carvings on display and there were always Inuit parkas in the closet and mukluks near the door.
Spending time at her children’s sporting events was one of Adele’s passions and was the constant scorekeeper at their baseball games. Of all of her pastimes she loved playing bingo the most. She went from beans to chips to blotters and finally electronic Bingo at Club Regent most times with her sisters-in law Sharon and Carol. Adele did love to support the local community clubs like Pirates and Oxford Heights also.
When Ron passed in 2005 she went to live in an apartment on Elizabeth Road and finally moved into Charleswood Care Centre in 2010. She stayed in good spirits through the pain of arthritis and other medical conditions. All of the staff there loved her sense of humour and her style of storytelling. They described her happily as “a character.” She continued playing Bingo right to the end...very proud of the fact she won a box of Smarties or a Kit Kat bar.
Adele’s spirit and strength will live on through her children, grandchild and great grandchild.
There will be a memorial at a time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Adele’s name to the Manitoba Arthritis Society.
