Maria (MARY) Wiecek

December 12, 1931 – November 16, 2014
Peacefully and surrounded by her family, Maria Wiecek passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Left to celebrate Maria’s life are her children, Christine (Michel Rochon), Irene Dutchak, Lucille Morrow (Dan), Steve (Wendy Gibbons), Paul (Karen); brother Romek Pieczonka (Helen); sister-in-law Stefania Pieczonka; grandchildren Adrienne and Patrick Morrow, Christopher, Heather, Ryan and Kathryn Dutchak, Matthew, Brian, Ben and Amanda Wiecek; as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Marian; parents Franciszek and Stefania Pieczonka; brother Zygmunt Pieczonka; nephew Danek Pieczonka, and son-in-law, Ken Dutchak.
Born on December 12, 1931 in Polska Wola, Poland. Following the commencement of World War II Maria was deported with her parents and brothers in February 1940 on an arduous journey from Poland to exile in Siberia. When amnesty was declared in June 1941, Maria travelled with her family, southward to Uzbekistan in search of the Polish Free Army. Enroute her father succumbed to the ravages of disease. Maria’s mother safely delivered her children to an orphanage in Bukhara. She was however, so weakened that she also passed away two weeks later. That all three children survived such a grueling journey is a testament to our grandparents, who kept their children alive against all odds. For safety they were then transported via Central Asia and the Middle East to the orphanage in Tengeru, Tanzania.

At war’s end, Maria moved to
England, where she completed her senior matriculation. With her brothers, she
immigrated to Canada arriving in Winnipeg on Christmas Eve, 1950. It was here
that Maria met her future husband, Marian. The couple married on November 29,
1952 and settled on Cathedral Avenue in the North End. They were active and
life-long members of the Polish Combatants Association, Branch 13 and Holy
Ghost Roman Catholic Church. Our mother’s faith sustained her and gave her
strength throughout her life.
Maria was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was extremely
supportive of her children and grandchildren in life and pursuit of their education.
She was very proud of their accomplishments. She loved nothing more than being
with her family and the memories we share of summers at the lake property will
stay with us always.
She worked for 27 years as an
employee at Eaton’s. Upon retirement life afforded her the time to read,
particularly books on history, politics and biographies. Having learned at an
early age what a profound effect the events of the world can have on a person,
she looked forward every day to reading the Free Press and never missed the CBC
National News.

Eulogy will commence at 9:45 a.m. on
Friday, November 21, 2014 in Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk
Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.
with Rev. Fr. Alfred Grzepa, presiding. Interment will follow in Holy Ghost
Roman Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Holy Ghost Church Fund, or a charity of your choice.
