The very embodiment of “hail fellow well met,” Lloyd M. Dole, has
departed this earthly realm on Sunday, November 9, 2014, in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
at the age of 59 years.
Left to forever cherish Lloyd’s memory are his brother, Roger; dear
companion Judy; as well as loving “ex,” Diane. He was predeceased
by mother Connie and father Gordon. He
also left behind a multitude of friends who are grieved at the thought they
will never again share Lloyd’s avid conversation, or his infectious love of
good books, good music, good television and good movies. A short list: the St.
James Supper Club; his Winnipeg Press Club pals; Lloyd’s Winnipeg Sun
coworkers; his softball and volleyball families; and the “Funky Five.”
Lloyd was technically born a West Kildonan lad, but became a staunch
fixture of sunny St. James, evidently a match for his usually sunny
disposition. He spent much of his life working in the media, specifically the
Winnipeg Tribune and the Winnipeg Sun, where Lloyd’s smarts and natural
ebullience made a perfect fit among the more fun-loving ink-stained wretches.
At the Sun, for example, when the late Lindor Reynolds decided to dress him up
for a Boy George look-alike contest, Lloyd was, as usual, game for anything.
Upon seeing the bathroom adjoining then-publisher Paul Robson’s office, he
would be the guy to cheekily inquire: “Publisher’s clearing house?”
Many of Lloyd’s comrades will remember the infamous Thursday night
get-togethers, watching Hill Street Blues or matching wits with him (usually
unsuccessfully) over epic marathons of Trivial Pursuit on Planet Dorchester.
Fond memories of gabbing over dinner or music on Moorgate, on Linwood, or on
Wharton, or elsewhere will linger for many. We will also remember his devotion
to his own pets, and Lloyd’s connection with all manner of cats and dogs was
truly amazing. Lloyd took great satisfaction in supporting unfortunate or
disadvantaged animals.
He will long be remembered for his unfailing loyalty, generous
heart, quick smile, and his capacity to share his passions with his friends.
Lloyd’s memory will be celebrated on the afternoon of Thursday, November
27, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Royal Canadian Legion, St. James
No. 4, 1755 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
