WOJCIK'S FUNERAL HOME - NICHOLAS BACALA FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

NICHOLAS BACALA

Peacefully, on Monday, August 18, 2014, Nick passed away at Deer Lodge Centre in his 91st year with family by his side.
Left to forever cherish Nick’s memory are his loving wife Olga of 65 years; son Douglas (Gloria) and their children Ryan (Ayako) and Lindsay (Steve); daughter Joanne and her son Tyler; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his family of four brothers and four sister.
On November 22, 1922, Nick was born in Winnipeg. In 1944 he enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and completed his training in BC. He then served in Holland and Germany in 1944 and 1945. After the war, Dad was employed as a painter and foreman with DND Winnipeg, north and south divisions. He retired in 1987 and spent many good years at the family cottage always on the go with never-ending projects. Dad will be remembered as a kind and gentle person who was devoted to his family. He was very generous and willing to take on projects for relatives and friends. He was an exceptionally patient mentor who passed on his skills in painting, carpentry and cooking to his children and grandchildren. Life changed for Nick after his fall in 2006, as he became confined to a wheelchair. Nick’s quiet acceptance of his situation was never met with complaints but with a graciousness that inspired us as a family.

Dad (Gido) will be sadly missed by his extended family, many friends and always remembered for his dry wit, generosity, and loving nature. We will always miss him and love him forever.
In accordance with Dad's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. A private family function will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff who, over the years, provided Nick with excellent care and support at the Deer Lodge Center. The staff on towers 6 and 7, as well as the staff on 3E were all exceptional and compassionate people.
Nick had a great passion for animals and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3K 0Y1.              Richard Wojcik of Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com
