WOJCIK'S FUNERAL CHAPEL - KAROLINA WIKTOROWICZ FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

KAROLINA WIKTOROWICZ
 (nee Domszy)
(1928-2014)

The Wiktorowicz family is heartbroken to announce Karolina’s peaceful passing on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the age of 86, surrounded by her family, after her long battle with cancer.
Karolina is survived by her husband Henry;sister, Genia Liusz (Gregory) and all her children; eight grandchildren, Barbara (Ben) and children Clare (Chris), Anna (Bryan) and Ruth Levin; Frank; Cecilia (Maurice) and daughter Emmanuelle Arpin; Mary (Mark) and sons Evan and Julien Garner; Paul; Hedy (John) and children, Chris and Leah Heppenstall. Karolina is pre-deceased by her parents, Peter and Frances Domszy; sisters, Helen Bator (Tony), Sophie Iskierski (Edward) and her brother, Joseph.
As a Polish refugee who immigrated to Canada in 1949, Karolina’s life was characterized by great adversity during her youth, followed by a peaceful and happy life in much of her adulthood.
The second youngest of five (three sisters and a brother), she was born in Ostrów Rzeszów, Poland, and resettled with her family on the eastern side of Poland in 1935 on a farm in KÅ‚odno Wielkie. In February 1940, at the age of 12, she was deported with her family to Siberia during World War II (Soviet German alliance in the invasion of Poland). Karolina survived and when Amnesty was declared in June 1941 (Soviet Union joined the Allies), she and her family travelled southward, in search of the Polish Free Army. Due to starvation and a severe illness, her mother placed her and her younger sister, Sophie, in a Polish orphanage in Uzbekistan. She remained in the orphanage as it relocated several times to East Africa, Rhodesia and Zambia. In 1948, Karolina, her mother and sister went to Britain to be reunited with her family, then immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada to join her father’s sister.
In Winnipeg, she worked in a garment factory and soon met Henry, a Polish soldier who immigrated to Canada after contributing to the Allied victory in Monte Casino. Married in 1951, they began a new life together, surrounded by her extended family and a thriving Polish community. In 1962 they moved to Transcona, and she worked part-time in her husband’s upholstery business. Karolina was a loving, selfless, supportive mother having had six children, eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Her greatest joy was playing with and feeding her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, especially known for her perogies and barszcz (beet soup).  She nurtured a deep spiritual life and cherished many friendships. The family spent many happy summers at their cottage on Lake Winnipeg. Karolina overcame breast cancer in her mid-forties and thrived for another forty years. She gave generously to her community by volunteering at St. Joseph the Worker and St Andrew Bobola parishes, the Polish Veteran’s Association and Tache Nursing Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., in St. Joseph The Worker Roman Catholic Church, 505 Brewster St, Transcona with Rev. Fr. Jan Spyrka presiding. Interment will follow in the Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Cemetery, 4387 Main Street.

WOJCIK'S FUNERAL CHAPEL - ALBERT OLSON FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

ALBERT HELMER OLSON

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather at the Grace Hospital on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at the age of 84.
Left to mourn Albert are his wife Hazel (his best friend for the past 59 years); their three children Mark (Leslie), Brenda (Chris) and Diane (Allan); and grandchildren: Kevin, Laura, Alana, Ryan and Connor. Also left to mourn are his brother Stanley, his sisters Dolly, Thelma and Irene, family and extended family members and his many, many friends. Albert is predeceased by his parents Jens and Astrid Olson, his brother Elwood, and his grandson Drew, who lost his life in a traffic accident in 2006 at the age of 17 and will always be in our thoughts.
Albert was born in Inwood, Manitoba, on July 31, 1930. He left home at age 15 to work for Ontario Hydro, creating a new hydro development on Lake Superior. He then took up an apprenticeship in plastering in 1948 and, in 1953, started his own plastering and stucco company. Albert went on to a very successful career in home building, land development and other related projects.
Albert was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge #145, the Optimist Club of Assiniboia, the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club and Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club, where he golfed with the same group for many, many years. Albert was also an accomplished curler: he was a three time Canadian Men’s Senior Curling Champion and was inducted into both the Manitoba and Canadian Curling Hall of Fame.
Albert was a true optimist who was warm, positive and had a real gift for making everyone around him feel special. He was a great talker who loved to laugh and put smiles on the faces of everyone he met. Albert could often be heard saying “there’s no way life could be better…” which was fitting because that is the way he lived his life to the end. He was a great believer in the power of positive thinking and the forces of the universe working together and always said that is what made him successful. Albert will be greatly missed by his family, his friends and by the many people he touched.
A celebration of Albert’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, at Grant Memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL HOME - JEAN JAMES FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

JEAN JAMES

Quietly, Jean passed away at Concordia Hospital on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the age of 91 years, leaving her husband, Arthur; children Brian (Karen), Stuart, and Tony; grandchildren Alison, Aaron, Daniel, Michael, Alexandria, Hope, and Andrew; her great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in Australia and Scotland to mourn her passing and reflect on how she touched each of their lives.
Jean was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Annie Miller; brothers Billy and Tommy; her sister Joanne, and second son, Ian.
On February 18, 1923, Jean was born in Stirling, Scotland, and instantly established herself as a forceful presence in the large clan of proud Scots there and in the nearby towns and villages. While still a teenager, she and her family moved to Greenford, England shortly before the Second World War. Jean was called up in 1943 and began service in the army (ATS) at the base in Greenford.
Jean’s love of big band music and “proper” dancing brought her future husband, Arthur into her life at the height of the war during a base dance. After a three month courtship, they married on June 25, 1944 and so began an enduring 70 year partnership. In the years following the war, she set up house at British Army bases throughout England, establishing homes for her growing family over and over again, the highlight being a brief few years in Malaya where Jean could indulge in her love of social affairs, and where she and Arthur enjoyed the many balls and parties and where they became renowned as the best dancers in her large and lively set of friends.
Always eager and willing to engage in adventures, Jean joined Arthur in their greatest of all when she packed up everyone and everything she had and emigrated to Canada in 1959, joining her brother, sister, and parents, who had all resettled in Winnipeg a few years earlier. Starting from scratch was never a daunting prospect for Jean and, in short order, she had her house and family in order and had acquired a long list of new friends, most of whom would be Jean’s life-long friends.
Jean will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her; who loved her.
A private service will be held in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.

RICHARD WOJCIK'S WINNIPEG FUNERAL DIRECTOR - GEORGE "CLIFF" FRYERS FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

GEORGE “CLIFF” CLIFFORD FRYERS
August 14, 1921-July 28, 2014

With deep sadness we announce the passing George Clifford Fryers, Retired Captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Lake of the Woods Hospital, Kenora, ON, at the age of 92 years.
Left to cherish Cliff’s memory are his beloved wife Marie; children Pat (Ron), Don (Laureen), Nancy (Lloyd), Bob (Jenny); step-son Gary Snell; as well as by several grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
Cliff was born in Saskatoon, the youngest of five children. He lived most of his life in Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School. He volunteered and proudly served for four years in World War II as a captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada serving in France. When Cliff returned from the war, he completed his training as an accountant for his career until he became a business owner and partner in Norwood Tent and Awning.
While growing up, Cliff loved family holidays at Long Pine Lake, Ingolf, Ontario which he later shared with his own children. With Marie, Cliff continued to enjoy their lake community life with good friends at Hockey Haven, Ontario. Their ongoing support and love, along with the very skilled and caring staff at Kenora's Lakehead Hospital, have helped immensely at this very sad time.
Since retiring 20 years ago Cliff has enjoyed his family, volunteer driving, friends and much travel with Marie whom he married in 2009 at Westworth United Church. He and Marie resided in Winnipeg and enjoyed a loving relationship together. Laughter, mirth and watching "The Wheelie" were their hallmark. Cliff renewed his driver's license by passing his first written and performance test in June at the age of 92. The only comment by the tester was "you are a little slow".
Cliff was a joy to his family and he loved all of them. His life was enhanced by his grandchildren who would enjoy a back and forth teasing relationship with him and bring much laughter into Cliff’s life, as he did to theirs. He was a wonderful story teller; stories built on extensive, usually accurate detail and colour. Cliff truly loved people, was interested in their lives and remembered what was going on for them. His enduring, beaming smile was directed to everyone and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate by cheque, in memory of Cliff to The Royal Canadian Legion, Dominion Command, 86 Aird Place, Kanata, ON K2L 0A1. (Please note as memo on the cheque "Poppy Fund - Cliff Fryers").
A Funeral to celebrate Cliff's life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, at 2:00 p.m. in Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
